CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE

Project Title

Code-switch identification -- adults

Purpose of the Study

This research is being conducted by Erika Exton and Dr. Rochelle Newman at the University of Maryland, College Park. We are inviting you to participate in this research project because you are the right age and have the appropriate language background for this study. The purpose of this research project is to investigate the way adults perceive and categorize languages, especially when the languages are unfamiliar.

Procedures

You will first be asked to fill out between 1 and 4 questionnaires asking about your language history. Following this, you will either hear speech presented over headphones or loudspeakers at a comfortable listening level, or will see words, nonsense words, or pictures on a computer monitor (or both). You will be asked to respond to these items based on what you think you saw or heard, either by pressing a button, typing into a keyboard, or moving your mouse. We may store where your cursor is hovering. This experiment will take approximately 25 minutes.

Potential Risks and Discomforts

The procedures in this study were designed to explore human speech perception and language processing. These procedures involve no foreseeable risks or discomforts for you.

Potential Benefits

There are no direct benefits from participating in this research. We hope that, in the future, other people might benefit from this study through improved understanding of how people use sound patterns and changes to identify when a language switch happens.

Confidentiality

Any potential loss of confidentiality will be minimized by storing all data on a secure University of Maryland server, password-protected and accessible only to research staff. We will mark all data with a subject ID number rather than your name.

If we write a report or article about this research project, your identity will be protected to the maximum extent possible. Your information may be shared with representatives of the University of Maryland, College Park or governmental authorities if you or someone else is in danger or if we are required to do so by law.

Compensation

You will receive $5 as a thank you for participating in this study.

Right to Withdraw and Questions

Your participation in this research is completely voluntary. You may choose not to take part at all. If you decide to participate in this research, you may stop participating at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you stop participating at any time, you will not be penalized or lose any benefits to which you otherwise qualify.
